Labour Family Reunites: Governor Otti, Senator Nenadi Usman, NLC and TUC Push for Unity, Structure and Strategic Coordination for 2027

The Executive Governor of Abia State and National Leader of the Labour Party, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has called for unity, structural consolidation and disciplined grassroots mobilization within the Labour Party as critical pillars for sustainable political impact in the 2027 General Elections.

Governor Otti made the call through his Deputy, His Excellency Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, at the One-Day High-Level Strategic Multi-Level Stakeholders Summit of the party held at the Labour Party National Secretariat in Abuja.

The summit, organised by the National Leadership of the Labour Party in collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Political Commissions, focused on the theme: “Reuniting the Labour Family: Consolidating Strength for Sustainable Political Impact in the 2027 General Elections.”

Addressing party leaders, stakeholders, union representatives, youths and women groups, the Deputy Governor emphasized that internal cohesion would determine the party’s electoral fortunes.

“Politics, like governance, thrives on unity of purpose. The strength of any political movement lies not merely in numbers, but in cohesion, clarity of vision, discipline, and shared conviction.”

He noted that under the leadership of Governor Otti, Abia State has demonstrated that the Labour Party represents purposeful governance, accountability and people-centered development, adding that the party must replicate this model nationally.

“Reuniting the party is not about papering over differences; it is about building trust, strengthening our structures, and ensuring that every stakeholder from the ward to the national level feels valued and heard.”

Looking ahead to 2027, Engr. Emetu stressed the urgency of early preparation, strategic coordination and sustained grassroots engagement.

“We must remember that elections are not won in the election year alone; they are won through consistent engagement, credible governance and sustained connection with the electorate.”

He urged participants to ensure that the summit produces actionable resolutions with defined responsibilities and timelines, while reaffirming the commitment of the Abia State Government to collaborative leadership and responsible governance.

Earlier in her remarks, the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, said the party had learnt critical lessons from the 2023 general elections and must now rebuild on a solid grassroots foundation anchored on labour institutions.

She stressed that effective political organization begins with credible membership registration at the polling unit level, facilitated through the NLC, TUC and affiliated unions. According to her, the absence of a comprehensive grassroots membership structure in 2023 contributed to the party’s challenges in planning and post-election litigation.

Senator Usman underscored the need to develop a reliable membership database and deploy registered members as polling unit agents during elections. Central to this strategy, she noted, is the systematic collection and safekeeping of Form EC8A at every polling unit to safeguard and defend the party’s votes.

She urged state chairmen and union leaders to return to their states with clear strategies for mass membership registration and validation, insisting that no durable political structure can stand without a solid foundation.

In his address, the Acting Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, Comrade Stephen Okoro, described the renewed collaboration between the Labour Party and the labour movement as a restoration of the party’s ideological roots.

He assured stakeholders that workers across the country would be mobilised in their millions to participate actively in the National Membership Registration and Validation Exercise. He emphasized that workers are not strangers within the party but foundational stakeholders whose commitment would strengthen its ideological and electoral base.

Comrade Okoro called on state political committees and union leaders to brace up for the tasks ahead, reiterating labour’s readiness to work with party leadership to achieve the vision of the party’s founding fathers and mothers.

The summit concluded with renewed commitments from party leaders and labour institutions to deepen unity, expand grassroots structures, and build a disciplined electoral framework capable of mobilising, documenting and defending votes across the country in 2027.

Members of the National Assembly, including the Member Representing Ohafia/Arochukwu Federal Constituency, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa; Member Representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Amobi Ogah; Member Representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe; Members of the National Leadership of the party, and major stakeholders attended the summit.
