The wait for the next Black Panther is finally over—and Marvel has delivered a casting surprise that few fans saw coming.

British actor David Jonsson has officially been cast as the grown-up son of the late King T’Challa, the character whose existence was revealed in the emotional closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Jonsson will take on the mantle of the new Black Panther in the highly anticipated third installment of the franchise.

The announcement was made by director Ryan Coogler at San Diego Comic-Con, putting an end to years of speculation over who would eventually inherit the iconic Wakandan superhero role.

His career continued to gather momentum, eventually earning him the 2025 Rising Star Award at the British Academy Film Awards, an honour that highlighted his growing profile and potential.

His casting as the new Black Panther now represents arguably the biggest opportunity of his career.

The third Black Panther film is expected to continue the story established by Wakanda Forever, while opening a new chapter for the royal family of Wakanda.

The transition from T’Challa to his son also gives Ryan Coogler an opportunity to explore themes of legacy, identity, family and responsibility from an entirely new perspective.

The film is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 15, 2028.
