Last night in Lagos, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, delivered a thought-provoking address at the 2025 Dinner and Award Ceremony of the Harvard Business School Association of Nigeria — an address built around a single, powerful truth: individual brilliance means little when the community is failing.

In what he described as “the epiphany that changed my life in Boston,” the Governor recounted a question posed to him by a foreign course mate at Harvard:

Why do so many Nigerians excel individually, yet the country continues to struggle collectively?

That uncomfortable but honest question awakened in him a deep sense of responsibility — a conviction that true success must go beyond personal achievements and extend toward the upliftment of society.

From that moment, he made a quiet but life-altering decision:
to stop observing from the sidelines and step into the arena of public service.

In the publication, he narrated his decade-long journey of courage, sacrifice, political battles, attempted sabotage, and eventual victory — all rooted in one belief:

Leadership is not about self; it is about the community.

He explained how this shift in mindset has shaped the reforms in Abia today — from infrastructure to education, security, civil service reforms, youth empowerment, healthcare and the deliberate effort to restore dignity to governance.

He also reminded Nigerians that leaving politics to people with questionable values is a collective disaster, echoing the words of Plato:

“The penalty of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.”

His message was clear:
Nigeria cannot rise on the back of individual success stories while the majority remain trapped in a failing system. True development is a community project.

A timely call to action.
A reminder that we are all stakeholders.
And a challenge to look beyond the self toward the greater good.
