DEPUTY GOVERNOR EMETU CELEBRATES CULTURAL HERITAGE, CALLS FOR UNITY, DEVELOPMENT AND MORAL REBIRTH AT CORONATION OF UDUMEZE OF OHAFIA ANCIENT KINGDOM

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, on Saturday, April 4, 2026, attended as Special Guest of Honour the grand coronation ceremony (Izu Ezie) of His Royal Paramountcy, Ezieohamoha Elder Awa Orji Udonsi, the Udumeze of Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, held at Achichi, Ohafia Elu, Abia State.

Delivering his address, Engr. Emetu emphasized the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in strengthening governance, fostering peace, and shaping societal values. He noted that in a rapidly changing world, cultural identity remains a stabilizing force for communities.

“Today is not just about the crowning of a king; it is a reaffirmation of a people’s identity, heritage, and unity. A people who honour their traditions secure the strength of their future.”

He congratulated the Udumeze on his ascension, describing the throne as a sacred responsibility that demands wisdom, courage, and selfless service. According to him, the monarch’s leadership will play a crucial role in uniting the 26 villages of Ohafia Ancient Kingdom and guiding the people toward peace and sustainable development.

“The stool of Udumeze is not merely a seat of honour, but a sacred trust — a call to serve, to unite, and to preserve the values that define the Ohafia people.”

The Deputy Governor further emphasized that the Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, recognizes traditional rulers as critical partners in governance. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with royal fathers to enhance grassroots development, improve security, and promote social stability across communities.

Speaking on infrastructure, Engr. Emetu provided updates on ongoing government interventions in Ohafia and its environs, particularly in the power sector. He disclosed that the reconnection of Ohafia to the national grid is actively in progress, with installation of poles and high-tension lines from Ihechiowa in Arochukwu Local Government Area to the substation in Ebem Ohafia already underway. He added that plans are in place for the phased replacement of dilapidated transformers across the area to ensure stable electricity supply.

“Be rest assured that Ohafia and its surrounding communities will be lifted out of darkness in no distant time, as our government remains committed to restoring stable electricity and reviving economic activities.”

The Deputy Governor noted that improved power supply will stimulate local businesses, enhance productivity, and create opportunities for economic growth, particularly for youths and small-scale enterprises in the region.

He also drew attention to the urgent need for moral reawakening in society, stressing that development cannot thrive in an environment plagued by social vices. He referenced the recently held Ohafia Re-Orientation Summit, which addressed issues such as drug abuse, cultism, vandalism, and declining moral standards.

According to him, tackling these challenges requires a collective and holistic approach involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, parents, and community stakeholders.

He charged the Udumeze to use his influence and authority to champion moral discipline, youth engagement, and community cohesion, noting that the throne remains a powerful instrument for positive social transformation.

“Your Royal Paramountcy, your throne is pivotal in this moral reawakening. Your voice carries authority, your leadership commands respect, and your influence can help redirect the energies of our youths toward productivity and purpose,” Emetu urged.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Sir Nnanna Eke Okpo, assured the Udumeze of his unwavering support and solidarity. He emphasized that the true sons and daughters of Ohafia stand firmly behind the throne and are committed to its success. He urged the monarch to uphold the highest standards of leadership, promote peace, and ensure equitable development across the kingdom. Sir Okpo further advised the Udumeze to remain vigilant and discerning, cautioning against individuals with divisive intentions, while encouraging him to surround himself with people of integrity and wisdom. He expressed confidence that the reign of the new monarch would usher in greater unity, stability, and progress for Ohafia.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Barr. Okechukwu Uma Kalu, expressed profound gratitude to God for the success of the event and appreciated the massive turnout of dignitaries, sons and daughters of Ohafia, friends, and well-wishers from far and near. He described the occasion as a rare and historic convergence of culture and tradition, noting that the “Izu Ezie” celebration symbolizes the pride, unity, and enduring legacy of the Ohafia people. He commended the collective efforts of stakeholders whose dedication ensured the success of the ceremony and prayed for continued peace, progress, and prosperity in Ohafia Ancient Kingdom.

Addressing his people, His Royal Paramountcy, Ezieohamoha Elder Awa Orji Udonsi, expressed gratitude to God and the people of Ohafia for their support since his ascension to the throne. He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting peace, unity, justice, and cultural preservation across the 26 villages of Ohafia Ancient Kingdom. The monarch highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen traditional institutions, enhance community security, and foster moral discipline, while calling for collective responsibility in addressing challenges such as youth restiveness, insecurity, and infrastructural deficits. He assured that his leadership would continue to prioritize fairness, accessible justice, and inclusive development.

Highlight of the event was the unveiling of the official portrait of His Royal Paramountcy by the Deputy Governor.
